Get a Learner's Permit

A Step-by-Step Guide for Teens and Adults Over 18
Getting a Florida learner’s permit is an important step toward becoming a safe and confident driver. Follow this guide to ensure you complete all the necessary steps.
Step 1: Complete the Traffic Law and Substance Abuse Education (TLSAE) Course
Florida requires all first-time drivers to complete a 4-hour TLSAE course before obtaining a learner’s permit. This online course covers the dangers of impaired driving, Florida traffic laws, and safe driving practices.
✅ Enroll in the TLSAE course here: Take the TLSAE Course
Upon completion, you’ll receive a certificate that is automatically reported to the Florida DMV.
Step 2: Study for the Florida Driver Knowledge Exam
The written test, also known as the Florida Driver Knowledge Exam, consists of 50 multiple-choice questions on road signs, traffic laws, and real-world driving situations.

✔️ Speed limits
✔️ Safe driving practices
Step 3: Take the Florida Driver Knowledge Exam
For Teens (Under 18 Years Old)
If you are under 18, you have two options for taking the test:
-
Online: You can take the exam through an approved provider.
-
In-Person: You can schedule an appointment at your local DMV (Tax Collector’s Office) and take the test at one of their kiosks.
💡 Tip: Teens can bundle the TLSAE course and online exam together when registering. Just click here and select “Available Upgrades” to bundle the TLSAE course with the online Florida Knowledge Exam.
For Adults (18 and Older)
If you are 18 or older, you must take the written exam in person at a Florida DMV (Tax Collector’s Office). Online testing is not available for adults.
